Devon Cafe | Surry Hills | Sydney | Australia

Every foodie knows that food is best when shared with friends.

Food is more than just something we eat for survival. Food is something that nourishes our bodies, soothes our spirits, and when eaten together it is a fulfilling experience that brings people from different backgrounds and walks of life closer than ever.

That is why when I meet new people who also love food I get so excited to show them the places I love to go to eat. Today I brunch at my all-time favourite: Devon Cafe with Em the Brit!

BEEN BACK STATS!
Times I've Been: + 10 times
Favourite Beverage(s): Double Espresso (Guest roasters), Matcha Latte with almond milk
Favourite Dish(es): High on Matcha (dessert)
Great if you: like rich food, Asian fusion, prefer quality over quantity, love specialty coffee
Not great if you: like a private setting, are on a budget

But first, espresso, pronto!

Today I drank a Double Espresso by Mecca Coffee

A few weeks ago I coined Mecca as a new adjective:

mecca - [mek-uh]
definition: activity performed at the level of high excellence
example: I had brunch at a cafe this morning but their coffee wasn't as mecca as the one I had at Devon Cafe in Surry Hills the other day!

True story, because the coffee at Devon is ALWAYS CONSISTENTLY GOOD.

Today I also had a Matcha Latte with Almond milk

Another beverage that is always consistently good are the matcha beverages, in particular the Matcha latte. I've been drinking this for just about a year now and it's still as creamy and delicious as ever - even with almond milk!

The Brit eats the Blini!

The best part about introducing food to new people is the opportunity to try new things that are often overlooked.

Cue: Blini.

But what is a blini?

Today Em the Brit ate the Eggs Blini

Buckwheat flour blini, poached eggs, citrus cured king salmon, salmon caviar, broccolini, and maltaise sauce

What is a blini? A blini, or bliny, is a Russian pancake traditionally made from wheat and served with sour cream, butter, or caviar. Blinis are thin, very similar to a crepe, but thinner than an American pancake, and it is milk-based as opposed to buttermilk-based.

Devon garnishes their blinis with smoked salmon just as the Russians do, then it is topped with a Maltaise sauce, which is a variant of Hollandaise sauce with blood orange and zest. Add broccolini, which tastes great with Maltaise, and it’s the perfect meal!

I’ll be honest, a blini is the sort of dish that I’d never think to try. I normally have my pancakes sweet, and I prefer my eggs poached on top of something meatier, but Em the Brit felt like something lighter and healthy - hence the broccolini.

Her verdict? She loved it! Apparently, it was like an eggs benedict far more surprising.

Today I ate Croissant Saint-Denis

Ghetto style crab & salmon omelette, salmon roe, confit tomatoes, fine herbs, and a French croissant

Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris, is the inspiration for this beautiful dish. Think gorgeous seafood, rich red tomatoes, delicate herbs, and of course a French croissant and fluffy eggs.

I don’t usually eat omelettes because most omelettes I order are severely overcooked, but I think I’m a changed woman. This omelette was light and fluffy, and the confit tomatoes were so soft and juicy. Generous ghetto crab portion too!

Today I ate the DMC - Devon Matcha Cake

This is the Devon Matcha Cake. It may be small, but it is more than a puny hockey puck, it’s a compact cookie of matcha goodness. With assorted textures of matcha cookie including mousse, sponge, tempered white chocolate and matcha ganache, it’s any matcha fam fan’s version of heaven.
