COCONUT HOTCAKES @ Blackwood Pantry, Cronulla, Sydney, AUS
I have found myself on the scenic side of Sydney this morning, the beautiful surfie suburb called Cronulla.
Now that I'm here, what to eat?
Consulting Zomato for a place to try, I found Blackwood Pantry. From first impression, they have a great menu with a lot of options, including the creative and the classics; and they also have specialty coffee, including V60, Aeropress, Cold Brew, and batch - phew!
The cafe is busy, which is a good sign. This is certainly a reflection of 4.0/5.0.
What's in the name?
Blackwood is a tropical hardwood tree of the pea family, which produces high-quality dark timber. It is found on the eastern coast of Australia. It's real name is Acacia melanoxylon, but it commonly known as the Australian Blackwood.
Blackwood is strong in compression, resistant to impact and is moderately stiff. It is these qualities, I believe, must have been the bases for the success of this business. Blackwood Pantry's philosophy have stood well true because of the endurance of the people who have cared so much for it, and why it has earned the reputation it has today.
Today I drank a V60 with Washed Ethiopian (Shakisso, Guji) by Mecca Coffee
My filter was absolutely delicious. It was so clear, so fresh, so light in body. I could taste strong notes of dark caramel, a bit of mellow pear, and a hint of florals - supposedly bergamot, but my nose nor tongue is that sophisticated yet!
Much praise to the barista to made this, for it now one of my favourites!
Today I also drank a Rose and Lychee Iced Tea
I was drawn to this voluptuous velvet red beauty before I even knew what it was.
Next thing I knew I was telling the waitor I wanted it.
And from the first sip I was seduced.
Rose and Lychee... foodies fall at the knees for such elegant combination.
Today I ate the Coconut Hotcake ("allow 15 mins")
with Fresh blueberries, Pomegranates, Passionfruit curd, and sliced toasted coconut
When the menu specifies a wait time, you know it's gonna be good. The hotcake was very warm, very soft, very fluffy and moist. It was sweet, but not so much that it overpowered the coconut. Combined with juicy, explosive blueberries, refreshing pomegranates, and the creaminess of the curd, it's one hell of a dish.
I warn you however, this dish is designed to share! I did not heed this warning, and I suffered the consequences - it was so rich that I could not finish the plate! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to bring Mr. Cardigan here some time :)
I enjoyed this place so much that I would most certainly make the trip from the city just to have these hotcakes again. Although maybe next time I'll be a little bit more sensible and have something savoury first ;)
