Four Ate Five | Surry Hills | Sydney | Australia

Surry Hills: Something extra special.

What I love most about Surry Hills, is that there is so much love, culture, and quirkiness around every corner. Where I am from (Auckland City, New Zealand), being different can be somewhat a curse, but Sydney is a city that welcomes fresh ideas, dares to be hipster, and goes beyond the unexpected. That’s what Four Ate Five offers on their menu - fresh, hip, and something extra special.

Today I drank a Chilter

Think about it: if you took all the coffee beans from every cafe on Crown Street alone you’d probably be able to fill an entire pool with it and take a dip - wouldn’t that be heaven?

Another idea of heaven would be brewing a filter coffee than chilling it in the fridge overnight and calling it a chilter! Such a good idea and I can’t believe I’ve never thought of it before. Perfect for summer, and it’s a good way to use up any leftover brew the next day.

Today Mr. Cardigan had some batch brew

Some like it hot.

There are the days when there’s nothing better than a hot cup of joe. On days where I don’t want the strong acidity of espresso coffee, a filtered brew is simply the best to gently sip on throughout the meal.

Today I ate a Beetroot & Yoghurt Puree Toast

On sourdough is Beetroot and Yoghurt Purée with Creamed Goats Cheese, Avocado, Poached Egg, Dukkah and Lemon Chilli Drizzle

I’ll be totally honest, I didn’t think I would enjoy this meal as much as I did. Today was one of those indecisive days and I while I struggled to find something that jumped out, I knew I would be the annoying customer to make everyone wait hours so I eventually settled for the oddest item on the menu.

Maybe it’s the fact that I had no expectation, or maybe it’s because the dish was so damn delicious, but this was one of the most amazing breakfasts I’ve ever had.

The beetroot and goats cheese is the perfect creamy combination with an excellent sweet tang from the citrus, avocado to add to that dreamy texture, and the crunch from the dukkah and freshly baked sourdough bread was absolutely sensational. Oh and that egg - that is the reason why #foodporn is a reality.

The perfect yolk 👌🏼

Today Mr. Cardigan ate The Sabich

Boiled Egg, Pickles, Eggplant, Chopped Salad, Tahini, Hummus & Chilli in Homemade Pita

When all else fails, you can’t beat a fresh pita pocket for breakfast. Savoury egg, oozey eggplant, nutty tahini, creamy hummus in a soft pita, such a drool fest! And of course that yoghurt dressing just brings everything together so nicely :)
