Summary: Bourke Street Bakery, the original corner cafe located in Surry Hills, is still a great place to grab pastries, pies, sausage rolls, or take home fresh-baked bread. Expect to pay boutique prices, but for fantastic and consistent quality product.
I can still remember making my first visit to BSB back when I arrived in Sydney in 2017. I was asked to write a piece about the 5 best places to find good food over the long weekend, and BSB came up on Zomato as number one. I don’t need to tell you my thoughts all that time ago, because 2 years later (and on the same weekend) I am still a hardcore fan.
My go-to is a pie, sausage roll, and a tart - all for myself of course. Being a New Zealander with a high opinion of meat pastries, I find BSB’s to to be the closest thing to being as good as the pies back home. However, the tarts are what keeps bringing me back. The famous Ginger Creme Brûlée tart is still a one-of-a-kind specialty of BSB that may never be rivalled. I highly recommend a visit to BSB if you haven’t already.
