Every now and then, it’s always great to experience a pleasant thrill when it comes to our food. There’s no denying that we have favourites, but for those who welcome something different, there’s places like Masque. The owner, who is adamant that we called him “Masque” rather than his given name, came up with a menu to satisfy both sides of a person’s palette: the side of us that just wants something simple, and the other side that likes things on the wilder side. Today, we explore some of Masque’s more unique creations, encouraging us to explore new things.
Prawn Tartare Croissant with lettuce, mango and Luxe Bakery croissant. I’ve actually eaten this before, for it’s one of Masque’s signature items. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s incredibly flavourful.
Lobster Udon with Japanese Udon, lobster roe, carrot, special creamy sauce and shaved bonito. One of his latest creations involves an entire Lobster that literally climbs out of the plate. This dish is extreme - delicious, rich and creamy, not for the faint-hearted.
Ox Tongue Don - 48hrs Marinated Ox Tongue, Spring Onion, Raw Egg Yolk, Special Bacon and Mushroom Rice. I think I speak for most fans of Masque that their Dons are some of their specialities. The secret lies in the way they cook the meat on top of the rice. By torching/searing the meat and laying it atop a bed of rice, it allows the oils of the meat to drip down to the bottom and coat every grain with flavour.
Ora King Salmon Don rice bowl with side dishes and truffle sauce.
Considered the wagyu of the sea, Ora King salmon is seriously some of the best fish to eat. It’s pricey, but when prepared correctly, is simple sensational. It’s soft, it’s juicy, and the flesh slides off like silk. This one was delicious with the truffle sauce.
Duck Breast with rice, mayo, seaweed, pickles radish and seasoning. When it comes to duck, you either love it or hate it. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan of the plating, but don’t let looks deceive you - this dish is amazing.
Cloudy pancake - Japanese soufflé pancake with boba, homemade brown sugar syrup and creme brulee. Fresh boba - YES. Brown sugar syrup - YESS. Creme Brulee - YESSS. How good is this souffle??!?!? Off the charts crazy good and crazy soft - worth getting and waiting for.
Pink Lady Drink - honey citrus fruit tea with chia seed, jelly. Apparently this has collagen in it, which is good for ladies’ skin. True or not, it’s a tasty drink.
