August is Oyster month, and what better way for The Morrison Oyster Bar to celebrate than with a great deal on this delicious delicacy.
The love of oysters, I find, is heavily divided - you either love them or hate them. I love them, my partner hates them, so I brought us both along to an oyster tasting, for more out of sheer curiosity I wondered if we would be able to share the same opinions on the types of oysters and flavour pairings we were served.
First up: Dressed To Impress - freshly shucked Australian oysters with a selection of dressing, served with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck champagne.
XO, Chilli, Orange and Black Bean - delicious for both of us; loved the distinct Asian flavour topping.
Chardonnay Vinegar Granita - his favourite, not mine; however I can appreciate the sharp tang.
Bloody Mary, Horseradish Ketchup - loved it, he didn’t; he said it resembled too much like tomato sauce.
Kimchi Vinaigrette - both our absolute favourites.
Next up: Entrees.
Grilled Pacific’s ‘In Shell’ served with soy broth and dashi oil - loved the taste of the oyster warm; the dashi brought out the natural flavour of the oyster.
Spicy Steak Tartare & Beer Battered Oyster with buttermilk dressing - the tartare was not spicy enough for our liking, but nonetheless delicious.
Oyster Carbonara with bottarga dust - the choice for those who don’t like oysters, yet I was curious to try it. Indeed, there wasn’t enough oyster flavour for me, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and loved the side of oyster.
‘Our Classic’ Carpet Bag Steak, oyster stuffed grass-fed eye fillet, proscuitto, cafe de paris, gravy - the description is a bit misleading, for the oyster is not stuffed but rather ‘melted’ through the steak. However, still delicious and highly recommend.
Fortunately, none of our desserts featured oysters (aww.) but maybe for the best! Chocolate Lava Cake and Raspberry Frozen Nougat were our choices for the night. The Nougat was definitely the favourite of the table.
Overall, we both ate our oysters, and for the first time ever my partner actually enjoyed it! Very well done Morrison.
